Stepping into its platinum jubilee year, the Blind Relief Association held its seventy fourth Annual Function on 07 December, 2018. B.R.A was birthed in the seeds sown by visionaries Smt. Anusuya and Shri Umesh Basrurker in 1944. With extensive work for the last seventy four years, the Blind Relief Association is striving to make every vision of its founders come true.

Professor S.R. Mittal, a distinguished authority on Special Education currently attached with National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visually Disabled (Divyangajan) graced the occasion as the chief guest. On his arrival, he was given a warm welcome by the school band of JPM Senior Secondary School.

Definitely it was a time of celebration at B.R.A. but it was also essential to honor the employees for their dedicated and long service. 34 employees including those from JPM School and Durgabai Deshmukh College were bestowed the Meritorious Long Service Award. The

students and trainees were also awarded for their outstanding academic performance in the  past year.

An array of cultural programs was presented by the students of JPM School, trainees of Durgabai Deshmukh College, Computer Training and Vocational Training. Few prominent instances of Mahatma Gandhi were enacted by the students of JPM School. The group dance by the primary class students conveying the message that each one is gifted differently captured the hearts of the audience. The trainees of Computer Training Center put up a play on Digital India. Other exceptional performances include group songs presented by Vocational Training Center and Durgabai Deshmukh College and a solo dance by a Class XI student of JPM.

Vice President Shri Ranjit Puri, Treasurer Shri S. K. Mishra, General Secretary Smt Benu Nath, Joint Secretary Smt Radhika Bharat Ram and other members of the Managing Committee were present at the occasion.
21st National Athletics Championship for the Blind           10-13  Dec, 2018

The 21st edition of National Athletics Championship for the Blind, the largest sports event for the visually challenged in the country was held in New Delhi from 10 to 13 December 2018.  The Meet was jointly organized by Indian Blind Sports Association (IBSA) and the Blind Relief Association, Delhi with USHA International as the title sponsor. While all the events were held at Thyagaraj Stadium, the premises of the Blind Relief Association was converted into a Games Village which lodged all the outstation athletes and officials. 

A record number of 603 visually impaired athletes and officials representing 86 affiliate institutions from 19 states across the country participated in various track and field athletic events. 49 players including 3 female players participated in the chess competition.  The participants included budding as well as top national and international athletes. 

The Meet was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Inderjit Singh, President, Paralympic Committee of India; Minister of State on

10 December at Thyagaraj Sports Complex.   Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, M.P. (Lok Sabha) was the Guest of Honour. 

A 2-day Goalball workshop was conducted by experts from Finland and Russia on the third and fourth day.  Kari Rasanen, Chairman, Juha Halme, Referee Coordinator and Alexey Baryaev, Sports Director from International Blind Sports Federation – Goalball, conducted both seminar and practice sessions for the athletes, officials, coaches, and referees.

The Valedictory Ceremony was held at Thyagaraj Stadium on 13 December. The first Indian boxer to have a won a gold medal at Olympics, Padma Shri Vijender Singh was Chief Guest and Shri Rahul Bhatnagar, Secretary of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports was the Guest of Honor of the ceremony. 

15 new National Records and 6 new Meet Records established by athletes from across the country, out of which 12 & 3 records were made by female athletes respectively.  
  Closing Ceremony of HSBC Mentorship Program                              17 Dec, 2018
“It’s not the end, just the beginning’ was a phrase repeated by most of the people in the gathering of the closing ceremony of HSBC Mentorship program in the Blind Relief Association.

The HSBC mentorship program, an initiative of Youth4Jobs and BRA with HSBC as a partner, was launched on 1 September, 2018. Designed as a pilot project, the idea was to mentor the trainees at BRA’s vocational training center in six one-to-one interactions spread over a course of three months.

At the closing ceremony held on December 17, the mentors from HSBC shared their experiences. Each one of them was overwhelmed to see the level of attachment  made over the last three months, with the mentees. Apart from the  the six face to face sessions arranged, the
mentors and mentees were in touch through phone calls. Few of the mentors were also scribes for the trainees who gave their railway examination last month. Mr. Naresh Kumar, a mentor speaking on the journey of the program said, “Definitely, we had a lot of challenges but it was a time where all of us could grow together.” Mr. Kumar also shared on how the whole process has sensitized them to be more inclusive and brought a deeper connect among themselves within the office. The mentees shared their joy on finding a friend and family through the mentor.

Mrs. Delphine, a senior official from HSBC  expressed her appreciation over the program and encouraged the mentors to create an even more inclusive society. The group also gifted MP3 devices for educational purpose of the vocational trainees. 
Excellence Award for JPM School                                                     18  Dec, 2018
JPM Senior Secondary School bagged the Excellence Award from the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi for the year 2018-19 for its brilliant performances in music, chess, yoga and other co-curricular activities. JPM School was among the 2 schools in the Zone XXVI to receive the award.
The school principal Shri KJ Kuriyan, Music Teacher Dr. Ravinder Partap, P.E.T Shri Pawan Kumar along with the students received the Award at a ceremony for the Zone held on 18 December at St. Thomas Girls Senior Secondary School. 

Topper awarded with laptop                                                               21 Dec, 2018

The Computer Training Center in the Blind Relief Association has had 5 batches in its class of Diploma in Computer Education and the topper of every batch has been presented a laptop by Smt. Prabhjot Menon, a donor and well-wisher.

On 21 December, Kamlesh Sehgal, the topper of 2017-18 batch was presented a laptop by Smt. Prabhjot Menon. In memory of her late mother,
Smt. Menon has been visiting the Computer Training Center and donating laptops for 5 years now. On her visit to the Blind Relief Assciation today, Smt. Menon, along with her husband interacted and encouraged the current batch students. 

Kamlesh Sehgal is currently working as a Computer Teacher with an NGO Silver Lining Shiksha  in Mayur Vihar.

Christmas bells ringing                                                                        22 Dec, 2018

The stars were shining, the tree was decorated and the Christmas bells were ringing at the Blind Relief Association.

On December 22, a music troop from NLC Church, New Delhi visited the Blind Relief Association and celebrated Christmas with the students, trainees and staff.

Pastor. Bosco and his team, dressed in red, white and black, sang carols that were greatly enjoyed by the all, especially the school students. Famous carols like “Feliz Navidad” and “Jingle Bells” brought the boys to their feet and dance. The musical evening brought smile on the children's faces along with the joy of Christmas.
