Coming together has been a frequent occurrence for the Blind Relief Association which believes in the power of community and society. Nonetheless, this time ‘coming together’ meant a meet up of over 700 people!
 

The Annual Picnic of the Blind Relief Association was organised on 2 February at Millennium Indraprastha Park. Members of the Blind Relief Association’s

family including students, trainees, staff, alumni, volunteers, and families gathered for some pure fun, to meet people and enjoy the warmth of winter sun as they sat on the grassy terrain.

Staff or volunteers, students or trainees, sighted or non-sighted. It didn’t matter. All that mattered was to sing, dance, play cricket and other games, enjoy the comical skit put up by the trainees of Multi-Skill Unit and partake in the meal together.
One-day Training for Special Educators                                         9 Feb, 2019

Challenges and experiments. Complications and trials. The hard work of special educators in the country revolve around much more than these and it becomes imperative to continuously learn and be sensitized.

One-day in-service training for special educators on RPwD Act, 2016 was held in the Gandhi Hall of the Blind Relief Association, Delhi on February 9, 2019. The workshop sponsored by National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan)

and organized by Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education had a participation of over 40 teachers from 24 institutions.

Sri A. K. Mittal, President All India Confederation of the Blind and Secretary General, World Blind Union; Dr. Swati Sanyal; Smt. Pubali Agarwal; and Dr. S. K. Dubey of Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education held four different sessions through the day. The teachers also learnt through the sharing and interactions with fellow teachers.

वसंत पंचमी                                                                                              10 Feb, 2019

वसंत ऋतु के शुभागमन की सूचक वसंत पंचमी के अवसर पर रविवार १० फरवरी को JPM स्कूल के छात्रों द्वारा संस्था के गाँधी हॉल में सरस्वती पूजा का आयोजन किया गया। छात्रों ने सामूहिक सरस्वती चालीसा का पाठ किया। हमारे अपने ही श्री पूर्ण चंद्र दास ने पुरोहित कर्म किया।  

संगीत और वसंत ऋतु के विशेष सम्बन्ध पर कार्यकारी सचिव श्री पाण्डे ने सोदाहरण बातचीत की और राग वसंत , हिंडोल, बहार और देस राग में पारम्परिक रचनाएँ सुनाईं। तबले पर संगत छात्र अभिषेक भोला ने करी। कार्यक्रम में अन्य विभागों के छात्र और प्रशिक्षार्थी भी उपस्थित थे।

New Beginnings with 3D Printers                                             11 & 12 Feb, 2019

An innovative technology that can make the education more fun and interesting for the visually impaired made its way to the Blind Relief Association through Dr. S. R. Pandian from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design, and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kancheepuram.

The Professor accompanied by two project engineers, Mr. Jacob Raj and Mr. Vignesh introduced 3D printers and CNC geometry teaching machines in the two-day workshop held at B.R.A on 11 and 12 February, 2019. 54 participants comprising teachers of JPM Senior Secondary School, trainees and staff of

Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education and Computer Training, and staff of Youth4Jobs took part in the workshop.

In addition they were also exposed to Arduino and Raspberry Pi, mobile robots, CNC mills, plastic models and puzzles. On the second day of training, the participants also got hands-on training on designing 3D models through Solid Works, a computer-aided modelling software.

The team gifted a 3D printer to the Blind Relief Association for future learning and use.

Bidding Adieu                                                                                             16 Feb, 2019

Music Teacher of JPM Senior Secondary School, Shri Mangal Singh was given a warm send off on 16 February who moved to the Government School service. Sri Verma joined JPM School in October 2017. Though he had a rather short stint in JPM, he endeared himself to the students and colleagues with his kind-heart and cooperative nature.

It was on 19 February sixty years ago that Shri Umesh A. Basrurker, who, along with his wife Smt Anusuya founded the Blind Relief Association in 1944, passed away. Students, trainees and staff from all units of the Association assembled for a remembrance meeting and the

Havan performed in the Gandhi Memorial Hall and paid their homage to the visionary Basrurkers, who conceived and established this institution which completes 75 years of services in the field of education, vocational training and rehabilitation of persons with visual impairment.

In honour of the Pulwama martyrs                                                 21 Feb, 2019

On 14 February, the country was shaken by the terrorist attack that killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel in Pulwama. With the national flag and placards in hand the students and trainees of the BRA on 21 February took out a solidarity march on Lodi Road in memory of Pulwama martyrs.

75 years down the memory lane                                                         26 Feb, 2019

Avtar Singh Chawla ji, Satya Pal Bharati ji, Bishan Singh ji, Prem Dutt Sharma ji who in 1950s joined as students in the Industrial Home and School for the Blind at Lal Kuan Badarpur started by the Blind Relief Association in 1946, shared reminiscences of the early years, especially those of the founders Shri Umesh & Smt Anusuya Basrurker.

The occasion was a get-together organised on 26 February marking the completion of 75 years of the Association’s coming into

being on 26 February 1944. There were other old timers like Madam Chandrakanta Sharma, Raj Kumar, Keshav Kumar of the sixties, and Ajay Kumar Dixit, Gulab Singh, Harish Kumar Gulati, Dayal Singh Panwar, Mukesh Gautam, Pradeep Kumar, Rajpal who shared nostalgic memories of the 1970s to 1980s. Their stories unfolding the history of development and growth of BRA kept the audience spellbound for nearly 3 hours. Hony. General Secretary Smt.Benu Nath was also present on the occasion.
