Havan in memory of Smt. Basrurker 4 June
|
|
Long forgotten are the riches left behind
Strong remains the services rendered kind
|
|
In memory of the Founders of the Blind Relief Association, Shri Umesh Basrurker and Smt Anusuyabai Basrurker, a havan was held in the Gandhi hall on 4th morning on the death anniversary of Smt. Basrurker.
Remembering the selfless and generous hearts, the trainees and staff of the Association participated in the havan hoping to fulfill the Founders' dream for them.
As recorded by Smt. Tara Bai, one of the founding members of B.R.A closely associated with Mrs. Basrurker since the inception of this dream,
|
"In 1942, when a blind man came to Mrs. Basrurker’s doors asking for financial help, long after immediate help was given this man and his helplessness remained in her mind as she kept thinking of ways and means to help, not just one such man but many others like him...Mr. & Mrs. Basrurker along with some like-minded friends, discussed the problem of the blind in India and with the aim of complete rehabilitation – psychological, physical and economic, founded the Blind Relief Association on February 26, 1944."
Smt. Basrurker fell a victim to a fatal disease and died on 4 June, 1958.

While all her Muslim friends had gone home to celebrate Eid with their families, Ladli chose to stay back and experience the festival with her small group of friends at the Blind Relief Association. Laldi, a multi-skill trainee was for the first time away from her family in Uttar Pradesh for Eid. " This year I didn't go home because my brother was not able to come and pick me, and also every year I've been at home, I wanted to see how I can celebrate with my friends here. I am so excited" she said.
Rupali, a volunteer has also added to the the excitement of Ladli by applying

mehendi on her hands.
In the previous years, Ladli celebrated Eid with her extended family -- visiting the big mela in her village, buying food with the pocket money her father gives, and wearing new clothes. Ladli has four brothers and one sister.
Though Ladli missed home, she totally enjoyed the celebration with her friends, an opportunity that she says is 'rare to find.'

Farewell to Vocational Trainees 21 June
|
|
"When people ask me what have I learned from the Blind Relief Association, my answer is 'Everything'," were the words of Mohit Kejriwal, a relaxation massage trainee at the Passing Out Ceremony and Farewell of the vocational trainees on 29 June.
14 multi-skill trainees, 7 two-month computer course trainees and 5 relaxation massage trainees passed out of their respective training programmes and were awarded certificates and given a warm farewell in Gandhi Hall of B.R.A.
Along with Mohit Kejriwal, many other trainees shared their experiences at the Blind Relief Association. Coming from different backgrounds, not many were
|
aware of the number of things B.R.A. had to offer. And now, as they complete the course along with the training on Braille, spoken English, basic computers and sports, a greater confidence can be sensed in these young men and women as they step into the real world. Multi-skill trainee Mahesh gifted Braille learners kits for the trainees, as expression of his gratitude.
At the Ceremony, Ms. Guneet from USHA International Social Services and Mr. Sudhir Kumar from Live it For Everyone Foundation were present along with the staff from the Blind Relief Association, Youth4Jobs and JPM Senior Secondary School. Live it for Everyone also donated two water coolers to the Association.
